FAQs

We are committed to offering the purest, most fragrance-free candle experience possible. We add absolutely no fragrance, essential oils, or scented additives of any kind to our candles.

That said, in the spirit of complete honesty, we want you to know that our 100% soy wax does carry a very faint, natural scent that is inherent to the soy itself and cannot be removed. This subtle natural scent is very mild and is nothing like the added fragrances found in conventional candles. The vast majority of our customers with fragrance sensitivities find it completely acceptable, but we feel it's important to be upfront about it so you can make an informed decision.

If you have severe fragrance sensitivities or allergies, we always recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before trying any new product.

We understand that this is an important question for many of our customers, and we want to answer it as honestly as we can.

Our candles are made from 100% soy-based ingredients with absolutely no added fragrance, essential oils, or synthetic additives of any kind. We believe this makes them a genuinely cleaner, purer choice for people with fragrance sensitivities, asthma, or chemical sensitivities. Many of our customers have told us that our candles have been a game changer for them in this regard.

However, every person's sensitivities and medical conditions are unique, and we are not medical professionals. We cannot guarantee that our candles are safe for any particular medical condition or individual sensitivity. If you have serious concerns, we strongly recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before use.

We also recommend that all candles, including ours, be burned in a well ventilated space.

We believe you have the right to know exactly what goes into our candles, so here is the complete picture:

Wax. Our wax is made from 100% soy-based ingredients, including soy wax and natural soy additives. The wax has no paraffin, no additional blended in waxes, and no synthetic ingredients. We're also proud that our soy is grown right here in the American Midwest, which means that when you choose Unscented Candle Company, you're also supporting American agriculture.

Wicks. Our wicks are made from all natural materials — cotton and paper. No metal cores, no synthetic materials, nothing you wouldn't want burning in your home.

Fragrance. None. Ever. We add absolutely no fragrance, essential oils, or scented additives of any kind to our candles.

We think that's a pretty clean ingredient list!

Honestly? Just about everything! While most candle companies compete on fragrance, we've made a deliberate choice to go in a completely different direction. We believe that everyone deserves the joy and ambiance of beautiful candlelight, including the millions of people who suffer from fragrance sensitivities, allergies, migraines, or who simply prefer a cleaner, purer burn.

But being fragrance-free is just the beginning. We're also deeply committed to honesty and transparency in everything we do, from the way we describe our products to the quality of the vessels we choose. Every candle in our collection is housed in a beautiful, reusable vessel that has a life well beyond the candle itself, because we think you deserve something worth keeping.

At Unscented Candle Company, we don't just sell candles. We offer a little piece of joy, beautifully packaged and honestly delivered.

Please note that during peak periods, such as the holiday season, processing and shipping times may be slightly longer. We will always do our best to keep you informed if there are any unexpected delays with your order.

Great news for those who love to repurpose! Any of our unpainted clear glass vessels are food safe once the candle has been properly cleaned out, making them perfect for storing everything from kitchen staples to homemade preserves.

For our painted glass vessels, such as The Ubud with its striking smoky black finish, we cannot guarantee food safety and therefore do not recommend using them for food storage. However, they are perfectly suitable for non-food storage and make beautiful containers for items such as cotton balls, jewelry, hair accessories, stationery, and so on.

If you are unsure whether your specific vessel is painted or unpainted, please don't hesitate to reach out to us and we'll be happy to help.

You may have seen general candle cleaning tips online, such as the freezer method or the hot water method. While these work for some candles, our wicks are attached to the base of the vessel with a sticker, which means the wax often won't detach cleanly with these approaches. Here's the method we recommend for our candles specifically:

Step 1. Place your vessel upright in an oven at 180°F and leave it until the wax has fully melted. You may want to cup it in aluminum foil to protect your oven from any wax on the outside of the vessel.

Step 2. Carefully pour the melted wax into a disposable container such as an old tin can or cardboard milk carton. Do not pour it down the drain, as it will solidify and cause blockages, and avoid pouring it directly into a plastic trash bag, as it may melt through. Allow the wax to solidify in its disposable container before placing it in the trash.

Step 3. Wash the vessel in very hot water with dish soap.

Step 4. Pry out the wick and metal wick tab from the base of the vessel.

Step 5. If any sticker residue remains, soak the base of the vessel in rubbing alcohol for a few hours and it will lift away cleanly.

Your vessel is now ready for its next life!

Burn time varies depending on the size of the vessel and the number of wicks, so rather than giving a general estimate that might not apply to your specific candle, we list the minimum burn time for each candle individually in its product details. You'll find this information on each product page.

It's worth noting that burn time can be affected by a number of factors, including how well the candle is cared for. Keeping your wick trimmed to ¼ inch before each burn and avoiding burning for more than four hours at a time will help ensure you get the most out of your candle.

Many conventional scented candles contain fragrances and essential oils that can be harmful to pets, particularly cats, who are especially sensitive to certain aromatic compounds. This is a very real concern for pet owners who love candles.

Because our candles contain absolutely no added fragrance, essential oils, or synthetic additives of any kind, we believe they are a much safer choice for homes with pets than conventional scented candles.

That said, we always recommend basic candle safety around pets: never leave a burning candle unattended, keep candles out of reach of curious paws and tails, and ensure the room is well ventilated. And as with any product, if you have specific concerns about your pet's health or sensitivities, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian.

With a little love and attention, your candle will reward you with the best possible burn. Here are our top candle care tips:

Trim your wick. Before every burn, trim your wick to approximately ¼ inch. This helps prevent smoking, sooting, and uneven burning, and keeps your vessel looking its best.

Be patient on the first burn. The first time you light your candle, allow it to burn long enough for the entire surface of the wax to melt almost to the edges of the vessel. This prevents "tunneling," where the wax burns down the center and leaves a ring of unmelted wax around the sides.

Don't burn for too long. We recommend burning your candle for no more than four hours at a time. Burning for longer than this can cause the wick to become unstable and the vessel to overheat.

Keep the wax clean. Try to keep debris, spent matches, and wick trimmings out of the wax pool, as these can become a fire hazard and affect the quality of your burn.

Store your candle properly. When not in use, replace the lid if your candle has one, and store it away from direct sunlight and heat to keep the wax in the best possible condition.

Every Unscented Candle Company candle is lovingly hand-poured in small batches right here in Minnesota. We believe that small batch production is the only way to ensure the level of care and quality that every candle deserves. It also means that when you order from us, you're supporting a small, independent, American maker rather than a large commercial operation.

We are currently an online only business, which means you can shop our full range of candles from the comfort of your own home, any time of day or night! You can find us exclusively at unscentedcandlecompany.com.

While we don't have any retail locations at this time, we do hope to make our candles available through select retail partners in the future. The best way to stay up to date on any exciting developments like this is to sign up for our newsletter!

We made a very deliberate decision not to put labels on our vessels, and here's why: we want you to be able to fully enjoy the beauty of candlelight without anything getting in the way. Whether your vessel is a clear crystal-inspired glass that dances with reflected light, a smoky black embossed jar, or a soft sage green recycled glass, a label would only obscure what makes it special.

We also think there's something wonderfully honest about a candle that has nothing to hide. What you see is exactly what you get, right down to the last inch of wax.

And when your candle is finished, a label-free vessel is so much easier to clean and repurpose. No sticky residue, no scrubbing, no fuss — just a beautiful container ready for its next life.

Product information, including wax type, wick details, and safety information, can be found on our website and on the outer packaging your candle arrives in.

That's a fair question, and we appreciate you asking! The truth is, we are a small, independent company and we simply don't have the shipping volume to negotiate the deep rate discounts that large retailers enjoy. When big companies offer "free shipping," the cost is almost always built into the product price — meaning you're paying for it either way, just less transparently.

We'd rather be honest with you. We charge a flat $7 shipping fee on orders under $70, and we keep our product prices as fair as we possibly can. We also don't want you paying sales tax on what is essentially a hidden shipping cost — another reason we prefer to keep the two clearly separate.

We think you deserve to know exactly what you're paying for, every step of the way. And the good news? Free shipping kicks in automatically on all orders of $70 or more!

Each of our candles is housed in a unique vessel with its own distinct personality, and we found that city names were the perfect way to capture that character. Just as every city in the world has its own history, culture, and aesthetic identity, each of our vessels tells its own visual story — from the Parisian crystal elegance ofThe Paristo the quiet, honest simplicity ofThe Minneapolis. We hope that when you find your favorite vessel, its city name feels like a perfect fit!
